ASL – American Sign Language:
The official language of the deaf. It has its own
syntax and grammar. (This is the “native tongue”
for the deaf in the US, and in English-speaking
parts of Canada.)
SEE – Signed Exact English:
Signing every single word in English.
(For children who are learning to write at a
young age or deaf.)
PSE – Pidgin Sign English:
Combination of English and ASL. (Used by
hearing signers whose first language is English.)
We are very excited to offer Sign Language as one of our “Foreign Languages”.
Our Instructor is a Certified Sign Language teacher with a wealth of experience and resources. She is both inspired and passionate, and will be able to teach you or your child the language, and guide you in learning about the deaf community as well.
Our Method: Just as in our other foreign language classes, we use a stimulating, hands-on approach that permits a student to sign from the first day of class. You will be watching and repeating and have a lot of fun practicing and learning entire conversations. There is no written sign language; you will be conversing with your hands.
Private, Semi-Private and Group Lessons: Whether you are looking to take Sign Language lessons to prepare for a career as a Sign Language Interpreter; or you’ve always had an interest in Sign Language and are now ready to learn it; or you and a group of friends want to learn something new and exciting ... here at The Language School we’ll tailor our instruction to your particular needs:
private instruction (you will receive the undivided attention of your instructor)
semi-private lessons (with a family member or best friend)
build your own group (3-6 students) with your friends or family – all you need is a mutually-convenient schedule.
Teaching Parents to instruct children with hearing impairment and disabilities: The best time for children to learn Sign Language is from their parents at the age of 3 months and up, as soon as their coordination skills develop. Teaching Sign Language to babies provides them with language and the brain development that comes with it. We will be happy to work with parents of children with hearing impairment and disabilities, and to set the appropriate program up for each individual family.
Educational Sign Lessons: If your organization is looking for sign language courses for your employees, please don't hesitate to contact us. We tailor our programs for all groups and situations.
Schedule and Duration:
There is no fixed schedule for private/semi-private or group lessons ... classes can start at any time of the year, and may be scheduled in the mornings, afternoons or evenings based on your and our teacher’s availability. We can schedule one lesson per week, or more. We’ll generally schedule 55- minute sessions for adults and teenagers, but 30- and 40- minute lessons can be arranged for the younger students.
